School Trips to a Game Reserve: A Teacher’s Guide to Planning a Visit to Kwantu

A school trip to a game reserve turns textbook lessons into something learners can see, hear and remember. At Kwantu Private Game Reserve, about an hour from Gqeberha, school groups can experience the Big 5, learn about conservation and enjoy sport and outdoor activities in a safe, supervised environment.

This guide is for teachers and organisers planning a visit.

Why take learners to a game reserve?

  • Living science: ecosystems, food chains, adaptation and biodiversity come alive when learners see them in action.
  • Conservation awareness: rangers explain the threats facing rhino, elephant and lion – and what protecting them involves.
  • Geography and history: the reserve sits on the historic Sidbury Plains, with an 1838 church and settler village at its heart.
  • Teamwork and confidence: time outdoors, away from screens, builds friendships and independence.

Trip options

Day visit

A 2–3 hour Big 5 game drive in open vehicles with an experienced ranger, plus a meal. Morning visits start at 09:00 and afternoon visits at 13:00, so groups from Gqeberha, Makhanda and nearby towns can be home the same day.

Overnight camp

One to three nights at the reserve, with morning and afternoon game drives, guided learning, sport and evening activities. Ideal for Grade 7 and high school groups, and for international school tours.

Valedictory and matric functions

Our venues can host end-of-year functions and celebrations for schools, with halaal catering and an alcohol-free environment.

Safety and peace of mind

  • Malaria-free: no anti-malaria medication needed.
  • Alcohol-free and fully halaal: suitable for learners of all backgrounds, and simple for menu planning.
  • Supervised activities: game drives are led by experienced rangers, and wildlife viewing takes place from vehicles.
  • Facilities for groups: a lecture venue for up to 500, sports fields, swimming pools and play areas.

Planning checklist for teachers

  • Preferred dates and a back-up date
  • Number of learners and adults, and the grade or age group
  • Day visit or overnight
  • Transport arrangements (bus or coach)
