Most first-time visitors to South Africa have one name in mind: Kruger. It is a remarkable place, and nothing here is meant to talk you out of it. But if you are flying into Cape Town or travelling the Garden Route, the Eastern Cape offers a Big 5 safari that is closer, malaria-free and, in one important way, simpler. Here is a plain comparison to help you decide.
Where you sleep makes the difference
At most Kruger-style safaris, the hotels and lodges sit outside the park gates. You drive in each morning, queue at the gate and drive back out in the evening. The animals are inside; you are not.
At a private reserve like Kwantu, every lodge is inside the reserve. Our main lodge, Pollards Inn, Elephant Ridge, Lions View, Buffalo Quarters and the new Buffalo Plains suites all sit within the same 6,000-hectare fence. The Big 5 roam free around you. You can watch elephant from the dining room, hear lion at night and leave on a game drive straight after breakfast, with no gate, no queue and no drive.
Kruger and the Eastern Cape, side by side
| Kruger National Park | Kwantu, Eastern Cape | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there | Flight to Johannesburg, then 4–6 hours by road, or a connecting flight to Nelspruit or Skukuza | About an hour’s drive from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) airport, or the end of the Garden Route from Cape Town |
| Malaria | Malaria area – prophylactics usually advised | Malaria-free – no medication needed, good for children and expectant mothers |
| Where you stay | Mostly outside the park, or in large rest camps inside | Inside the reserve, in a lodge with its own game drives |
| Game viewing | Self-drive on tar roads, or guided; sightings can be crowded | Guided in open vehicles with a ranger; off-road where the sighting calls for it; limited vehicles per sighting |
| Big 5 | Yes, across a very large area | Yes, on a reserve small enough to see all five in two or three drives |
| What’s included | Usually room only or bed and breakfast; drives and park fees extra | All meals, two game drives per night and conservation levy included |
| Time needed | Three nights or more to make the travel worthwhile | One or two nights fits easily into a Cape Town or Garden Route trip; day visits possible |
Who the Eastern Cape suits best
- Families with young children. No malaria tablets, short drives, and family rooms at Pollards Inn where children under 5 stay free.
- Garden Route travellers. Kwantu is a natural last stop before Gqeberha, so you finish the drive with a safari rather than a long detour.
- Short-stay and business travellers. A night or two from Gqeberha gives you the full experience without a cross-country trip.
- Groups and events. Weddings, conferences, year-end functions and school groups all stay inside the reserve, with venues for up to 1,000 guests.
Who should still choose Kruger
If you want weeks of self-drive exploration over an area the size of a small country, or you are set on the far-north Kruger experience, go to Kruger. For a Big 5 safari that is easy to reach, malaria-free and all around you from the moment you arrive, the Eastern Cape is hard to beat.
