Here is what a halaal safari at Kwantu looks like, and what to know before you book.
A fully halaal reserve – not just a halaal menu
Some lodges offer a halaal option on request. Kwantu is different: the kitchens are fully halaal, so every dish served on the reserve – from breakfast to the evening meal – is prepared to halaal requirements. Our chefs serve a mix of African and Asian cuisine, and non-alcoholic drinks are served with all meals.
Alcohol-free throughout
No alcohol is served or allowed anywhere on the reserve, including the lodges, the dining room and the function venues. For families with children, and for guests who simply prefer an alcohol-free environment, that creates a relaxed, respectful atmosphere from the moment you arrive.
Prayer facilities
Kwantu has a prayer room (salah) for guests, and our team can advise guests who wish to attend Jumu’ah prayers on a Friday. If you need anything specific – such as qibla direction or prayer times during your stay – just ask at reception.
The Big 5, malaria-free
Kwantu is a 6,000-hectare private reserve on the Sidbury Plains in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard roam free, along with giraffe, zebra, antelope and more than 250 bird species. Game drives run in open Land Rovers with experienced rangers.
The Eastern Cape is malaria-free, so there is no need for anti-malaria medication – an important point for families with young children, older relatives and pregnant travellers.

Getting here
Kwantu is about an hour’s drive from Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), between Gqeberha and Makhanda (Grahamstown). Airport transfers can be arranged on request, and the reserve fits easily into a Garden Route or Eastern Cape itinerary.
